BFIRST was founded by a keen group of Plastic Surgeons, as the overseas charity arm of BAPRAS and has grown substantially.
BFIRST is now made up, not only of plastic surgeons, and works with other specialists too. For example, we have an established link with BSSH, the UK’s main Hand Surgery Society, which comprises of plastic and orthopaedic surgeons.
As always, reconstructive surgery needs the support, not just of doctors, but also nurse, therapists, and other allied specialists. We visit partner countries with a combination of volunteer specialists!
Training is the backbone of BFIRST. We have an established a Trainee Sub-committee, made up of plastic surgical trainees and medical students.
Finally, we have had enormous support from industry and the private sector, both in terms of logistical support, equipment provision and fund-raising.
